UV Rays Explained

We all know the importance of protection against the sun. We’re constantly reminded of the dangers of too much sun exposure such as skin cancer, increased wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation (uneven skin tone). That’s why it’s important to wear sunscreen every day—no matter the season or the weather or the color of your skin.

To truly protect yourself, though, it helps to understand the different types of UV rays and how they affect your skin. UV rays come in two types: UVA and UVB.

UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and cause damage to collagen and elastin fibers. This leads to premature signs of aging, sagging skin, and wrinkles.

UVB rays are more powerful, and these rays affect the outer layers of the skin. They’re the main cause of sunburns, and too much exposure to these rays increases the risk of skin cancer.

You may be tempted to grab any sunscreen off the shelf, but it’s important to know that not all sunscreen is created equal. Many sunscreens only protect against UVB rays, leaving your skin unprotected from the aging effects of UVA rays. To ensure maximum protection, buy your clinical grade “broad spectrum” sunscreen from a Dermatologist.

Here at Northshore Dermatology, we have several full spectrum sunscreens for all skin types and uses that are sure to protect your skin and keep it healthy and beautiful.
