Eczema is characterized by dry, scaly, red itchy skin. Eczema affects patients of all ages but is most commonly seen in infants and children. Often referred to as atopic dermatitis, eczema can appear anywhere on the body and ranges from a mild to severe disease. Sleep, school, and work may all be affected by the disruptive and uncomfortable itching often associated with this condition.
There are many eczema treatment options available for this disease, although no one single cause has yet to be identified. Topical steroid and nonsteroidal medications, antihistamines and ultraviolet light are commonly used with systemic steroids reserved for the most severe cases.
